John wrote: "I was first named Rephlone Gardenhier Creekmore. This was after a Judge Gardenier but when he went with the south after the Civil War broke out Mother Changed my name to Rephlone Johnson. You will see both of them written in the old Bible and one of them scratched out. For years I have signed my name John-I haven't written my full name R. J. G. in 20 years or more." He also mentioned this in a letter 23 Nov 1930. [Thornton papers, p. 45]
