Mehala CREEKMORE was the G-grandmother of Mrs China Cordell Hicks. China's mother, Mehala Emeline Ryan Cordell, was named for her grandmother, Mehal. They use the spelling Mehala. According to her descendents, Mehala was "small, with straight posture, very fair in coloring, blue eyes, black hair with a natural wave." Her husband "was of medium height, olive complexion, black hair, 'black' eyes, high forehead, not given to talking..." [Thornton papers, p. 65]
