He was commissioned First Lieutenant of the "Dixie Boys," a company of the Second Mississippi Battalion on August 12, 1861, and was killed in battle June 27, 1862, on the Chickahominy River while leading a charge in an effort to capture the Federal Artillery posted on a hill. [Thornton papers, p. 15]

He didn't have it corrected until 1983 when he turned 62, so he could be eligible for social security. Thus birth dates = 16 Feb 1922 (legal) 16 Feb 1921 (actual)

I believe her name to be Elizabeth Jane, since her mother was Elizabeth and the birth record for her daughter Susannah (in Whitley Co, KY) lists her as Elizabeth, although she is listed as Jane on all other birth records as well as census lists.
